Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset Definitions

 

 

question 1 :

First Video: Below is a link to a video describing Mindset – the set of attitudes and beliefs that we hold about something. When it comes to intelligence, there are 2 known Mindsets, the “Growth Mindset” and the “Fixed Mindset.” People react very differently to obstacles and failures depending on which mindset they hold.

So, watch the Mindset video below and then write a one paragraph long response to this video (at least 5 relevant sentences in length for full credit). Questions to answer in your essay: What was this video about? What happened to each of the twins as a result of their mindset? What kind of mindset do you think you might have? How does that make you feel?

Professor Carol Dweck developed the concept of Mindset. Please watch her video on mindset below. Then write your essay (at least 10 sentences) in response. Your essay should address the following questions: According to Dr. Dweck, why is “not yet” a reasonable grade to award? What did Carol Dweck find when she gave kids very difficult problems to solve? How can you develop a growth mindset?

question 5 :Donald is a new CSUN freshman who has a fixed mindset. Please describe how you’d expect Donald to react when he discovers that he received an F grade on multiple exams during his first semester at CSUN. Your answer needs to include at least 3 predictions. (1) How would Donald feel about himself? (2) Would Donald change his study habits? If so, how? If not, why not? (3) Will Donald consider dropping out of CSUN?

question 6 :Mike is a new CSUN freshman who has a growth mindset. Please describe how you’d expect Mike to react when he discovers that he received an F grade on multiple exams during his first semester at CSUN. Your answer needs to include at least 3 predictions. (1) How would Mike feel about himself? (2) Would Mike change his study habits? If so, how? If not, why not? (3) Will Mike consider dropping out of CSUN?

Every term I meet new students who, unfortunately, hold fixed mindsets about their own abilities in college. Whenever these students perform poorly on an exam, they conclude that they do not belong in college. They don’t try to adapt. They just give up. It’s hard to watch because everyone struggles in their first year of college.

I need your help with next year’s freshmen. I’d like to share your stories (anonymously) with future students to help them understand that everyone struggles in college and that struggling doesn’t mean that they are dumb or don’t belong in college. Struggling just means that you are facing a challenge and need to adapt.

Below, please write a story about yourself (or a friend) describing how you struggled with some academic challenge when you started college. The goal here is to help the reader realize that struggle is a normal part of college. Let them know what you did or are doing to meet your academic challenges. Please keep it honest. I want everyone to write a story that is at least half a page long (so at least 125 words for full credit). If you don’t want your story to be shared, then please just indicate that at the bottom of your essay. Any stories shared with next year’s freshmen in PSY150 will be edited to be completely anonymous.
