• Question 1:Because race is a social construct, the reason why people are leaning towards being able to pass as black is more so based on trend. In society now, being black is seen almost more as “cool” rather than what it would have been viewed as before. However, I would not say that is 100% accurate about our society. The people who can pass as black recieve all of the benefits of being black until they choose not to accept certain aspects of being black.Being a black person in today’s society is better than it was 40 years ago but, they still experience everyday racism, bigotry and prejudice. So, when a person who passes as black all of a sudden experiences a racist comment or experience, they out themselves by announcing something along the lines of “i’m not even black”. But the same goes for passing as white. A person during the Jim Crow Era would really only identify as white when it benefited them. The Jim Crow Era was a bit more extreme than modern day society, but the intentions behind passing are almost the same.
  
• Question 2:Everyone likes to say that they are Native based on the fact that they were in America first. But that isn’t the case for everyone. Some Native Americans also receive reparations from the government and if a person is registered to a certain tribe, they too receive that money. Everyone wants to be Native when it comes to “free” money which is exactly why being “one drop” isn’t enough. For specific tribes, they require a blood quantum level of more than a fourth Native American in order to register to that tribe. For blacks, the one drop rule is a concept placed upon them. White people created the one drop rule as a tool to further racial discrimination. It was used more so as a negative ideology.A person during the Jim Crow Era could have fair skin, light hair and light eyes, and pass as white. But, as soon as someone discovered they had a black ancestor, they were all of a sudden just black. The one drop rule was rooted in hatred in the past but in today’s society it has been shifted into acceptance. The black community as a whole is overall accepting, granted they have their own issues within the community, but once they know a person is black, they’re black forever. They become apart of a community that isn’t perfect, but apart of a community that it welcoming and accepting, despite what outsiders believe.

• “Identity as a process: individual agency and ‘Identity work’ ” people would cope with a stigmatized identity with “covering and or concealing the stigma”. For example “ minorities might conceal their ethnicity not to pass but rather to “ restrict the way a known-about attribute abtrudes itself into the center of attention”. To put it into my own words people would change their identity to what is more known and or accepted to not “stand out or be different”. Also in the reading we see an example as Oliva’s peers calling her “white girl” due to her long hair so she would pick it out into a fro to “downplay her while ancestry” and pass as black.Being black and or “ blackness” differs from Native American identity because at that time era the two dominant races were either white or black. From the reading the difference between the two races regarding the one drop rule is that Americans “ were forced to choose one race by ignoring the fact that some Americans were multiracial and identified with more than one race ( not just as black). If you wanted to be Identified by another race you had to fight to prove it due to the reinforcement of the one drop rule.
