Workplace diversity means creating an inclusive environment that accepts each individual’s differences, embraces their strengths and provides opportunities for all staff to achieve their full potential. In this assessment task you will be demonstrating skills and knowledge in understanding diversity and its importance at the workplace. You will be addressing the following topics:

Activity 1: Knowledge Questions

This knowledge test will enable you to demonstrate your knowledge in understanding the importance of diversity in your workplace. You can research your answers using your workbook or browsing the Internet but your answers must be in your own words. Activity 2: Group Discussions

In this activity you will be required to read the statements below, discuss each statement with your colleagues and write the outcomes of each discussion in the spaces provided. You can conduct group research activities using your workbook or use the Internet to assist you with the discussions but your answers must be in your own words. Each of your responses must be answered as per the instructions for each question.

1.6 In small groups discuss how businesses adapt their procedures in relations to the needs of diverse groups by quoting examples from your own workplace (Guide ? minimum of 3 examples)

1.7 Read the following statement:
?Diversity policies from similar organisations should be almost identical to the diversity policy for your organisation.? Discuss this statement with your colleagues and explain why you agree or disagree. (Guide ? 1 paragraph)

Activity 3: Case Study
Instructions to the students
Five female workers of Lebanese origin work at a chicken meat processing plant of the outskirts of Melbourne. The plant employs about 200 workers, the majority of them women from largely from non-English speaking background and most of them are married with small children. The five women workers find the posters and calendars that are displayed in the workplace sexually explicit and offensive but they are too embarrassed to complain about them.

Questions
In small groups discuss the case study above and list the outcomes of the discussion based on the following questions.

With the Applied Learning Project you will demonstrate that you have the skills, knowledge and understanding to develop and implement a diversity policy through the process of researching diversity, drafting policy, planning and then effecting its implementation.
Instructions to the student
A. Your organization is committed to creating and promoting a workplace environment that values and supports diversity. To support this goal and foster commitment from all team members, you have been given the responsibility of developing your organisation?s diversity policy and then ensuring its effective implementation.
This process will begin with detailed research to gain an understanding of the organisation?s current views and practices for diversity.
