In todays’ research report for Module 5, I would like to choose the relationship between homosexuality and the religious belief as my topic. Three years ago, the Supreme Court of United States ruled that marriage, including same-sex marriage is a constitutional right. From the reaction of the related churches in different states, people trend to treat the rules and laws that support same-sex marriage as the threat to freedom of religious belief. In the past, American society has held a negative attitude toward homosexuality for a long time, it was because of the profound Christian tradition. As the influence of the Jews have increased in various fields in the United States, the Democratic Party that supported by the Jews always have a tolerant and support attitude for homosexuality. Obviously, the negative attitude to homosexuality of Republican Party with a strong Christian tradition cannot avoid the influence of religious factors. Therefore, homosexuals in American, the group of millions of people, have always been powerful supporters of the Democratic Party as an influential source of votes. The attitude of the US government towards homosexuality basically reflects the characteristics of the ruling party. The Republican president always have a negative attitude towards homosexuality in the name of Christian theology. Democrats applaud last year’s decision by the Supreme Court that recognized LGBT people— like every other American—have the right to marry the person they love(1). So that we can see that the President of the Democratic Party has a positive attitude towards homosexuality in the name of “personal freedom” in secular culture.

For this module’s discussion post, I’m going to talk about the Dutch. The Dutch sailed to the New World in 1626, purchased Manhattan Island and established Fort Orange which was located in the northern part of Manhattan, located where Albany is today. The West Indian Company was created strictly with a commercial business mindset. Invading and taking over Spain and Portugal’s trading routes established in the territory. Even though the Dutch wanted to focus on international trading overseas, they still wanted settlers and Native Americans to be educated in the religion of the “Dutch Reformed Church.” Ministers were then sent out to naturally to teach settlers and expose Native Americans to their religion.
The Dutch Reformed Church was recognized as the Church of New Netherland in 1629. The church promoted and aimed for religious tolerance. Holland wanted to remain peaceful with other religions, not letting any religious issues affect its main priority in becoming a big player in trade and commerce industry. Until, Peter Stuyvesant took over in 1647. He tried to kick the Jews out of New Amsterdam, luckily the Jews fought against him and were still able to remain under a few rules. Peter received harder resistance from the Quakers, but still had no success. Instead the people revolted and the company fought against Peter’s religious persecution.
War broke out between Swedish Lutherans who came to the New World in search for wealth and the well-established Dutch colonies. They established Fort Christina along the Delaware River. More Swedes arrived to Fort Christina to expand territory by overtaking Dutch lands. As Swedish Lutherans were forcing their way into the New World, Peter violently forced them out. Just as he was about to create a monopoly, he surrendered to the British and New Netherlands became New York. But nothing new came of this. There was still widespread of different religious groups, yet no religious tolerance. There was still one recognized church that was granted religious freedom. Which was whichever religion followed closely to the Church of England. Although, the Dutch began to prosper with all the commercial and trade at the time, providing religious tolerance came to no avail as different leaders rose more religious issues began dividing the colonies. Eventually the West Indian Company dissolved due to depletion of natural resources in 1794.
