PSY101 INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY
Chapter 11: Social Psychology You are a new middle school social studies teacher and you are working on classroom management to get your 6 grade students to behave properly in class, pay attention, and do their schoolwork. You decide to use your knowledge of psychology to help you! First, describe the three types of social influence, conformity, compliance, and obedience, making sure to explain the similarities and differences between them. Second, name and explain the three ways that you could convincing a certain student to comply with one of your requests. Third, imagine that you asked students to use their Chromebook during class time to start writing a report on the American Civil War. Now please describe how you could use each of these three compliance techniques to get the students to start researching the information and writing the report. Chapter 12: Self & Personality You are applying for a job at a large company. A personality psychologist in the Human Resources Department uses a series of personality tests to determine whether you are a good fit to be an employee at the company. First, name and explain one projective personality test that you could be given, name which theory of personality it relates to, and briefly explain that theory. Second, using the key terms from that theory of personality, please analyze your own projective test results (from our in-class activity sheet) and explain what the personality psychologist would say that this projective test reveals about your personality. Third, name and explain one objective personality test that you could be given, name which theory of personality it relates to, and briefly explain that theory. Fourth, using the key terms from that theory of personality, please analyze your own objective test results (from our in-class activity sheet) and explain what the personality psychologist would say that this objective test reveals about your personality.
Chapter 13: Psychological Disorders AND Chapter 14: Treatment of Psychological Disorders
You are training to become a clinical psychologist. For your certifying exam, you must think critically to analyze a case study about a client with a psychological disorder. After you read the case study below, please answer these questions. First, analyze this case study by describing what you observe about the client and then use this information to name and explain the two main symptoms this client is showing. Second, based on your analysis of these two symptoms, name and explain what one diagnosis you would make for this client. Third, name and describe two psychoactive drugs and one psychotherapy technique that are most likely to be successful in treating the client and explain how each of these three treatments can help.
Bert is 40 years old and works on an assembly line in a brush factory. He is terribly afraid of getting sick from germs and thoughts about dirt, germs, and illness worry him most of the time. He avoids shaking hands with others, including his boss. He won’t eat in the cafeteria with his co-workers. He goes to the bathroom to wash his hands much more often than his breaks permit. He has trouble leaving the bathroom because he must wash his hands repeatedly with scalding hot water. As a result, his hands are so dry, cracked and bleeding that he has trouble doing his job. Bert has been reprimanded several times because of his actions and has been warned that he will be fired if he doesn’t stop his behaviors.
