You are the HR manager of a relatively new retail company that has both retail stores and Internet sales. Your company is steadily growing in revenue and profitability. The company realizes that in order to retain the solid, highly productive workforce it currently has in place, it is important to enhance the base compensation and benefits package offered to the employees. The company currently offers a basic compensation program and only federally mandated benefits. Employee surveys suggest the compensation and benefits program may be out of date. Employees are beginning to consider leaving the organization.

A secretary, or administrative assistant the more commonly used job title for the position,
is not a high paying career in any industry, but it does fluctuate by industry. For instance, a
secretary working in the legal profession will make more money than say the secretary for a
small service business. The pay and benefits for an administrative assistant also varies by region
with the higher salaries being offered to those secretaries in the Northeast, upper and lower
Midwest, and Southwest regions of the United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says,
“Employment of secretaries and administrative assistants is projected to grow 12 percent from
2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Many job openings will result
from the need to replace workers who leave the occupation” (BLS, 2015). Even though the
demand is great, the salary and benefits are only average.
On average, an administrative assistant makes about $14 per hour in the United States,
but that average accounts for higher than average pay in those areas mentioned above and lower
than average pay in other areas. For example, an entry-level administrative assistant in Portland,
Oregon makes $12.46 to $15.67 per hour, which is about average. In terms of yearly salary,
those hourly figures work out to about $26,000 to $35,000 per year. In contrast, the same
position in pays Morris County, New Jersey advertises starting salaries at “up to $50, 000 per
year,” which works out to $24 per hour (Salary, 2015). Of course, the “up to” qualification in
that advertisement means that probably a candidate for the position would be paid less than
$50,000 per year, but probably not half as much or even as little as 70% of what the position
pays if the potential employee has some experience and/or education.
As far as a benefits package goes, that too differs based on demographic factors. College
graduates should expect to command a better salary than those who have not completed college.
Many companies prefer to hire administrative assistants with college degrees. Taylor of the U.S.
News, Money says, “Just as the tasks have evolved, the number of certifications, programs,
webinars, seminars and professional organizations for administrative assistants have grown”
(Taylor, 2015). The more skills that an administrative assistant has, the better pay s/he is going to
command. Typical offers in an entry-level employee’s compensation package include health care
and 401Ks, but usually, the latter is only offered after successful completion of at least a year’s
employment. The same goes for vacation benefits. Usually, a week’s paid vacation is the reward
for one year’s employment at a company as an administrative assistant. Health care insurance
may or may not be offered depending upon the size of the company. Those with more than 50
employees are required by federal law to offer health care insurance to their employees. Most
companies realize that if they are going to hire and retain the best employees, they will have to
offer a fair compensation package which may include not only a good salary, health care
insurance, 401Ks and vacation days but also other more trendy and recently adopted benefits
such as telecommuting, job sharing, flexible hours and other benefits that specific employers
may be better able to offer its employees than others.
