- Find a friend, classmate, roommate, co-worker, faculty, or staff member who is from a culture other than your own who is willing to be interviewed about their childhood experiences. A sample consent form for interviews will be posted in blackboard for you to use to obtain participant consent.Conduct a 30-minute long semi-structured interview where you ask about: where they grew up, what culture they are from, one parent or two parent household? Parenting styles, child-rearing techniques in their culture, such as discipline, potty training. You can ask about developmental milestones, siblings and sibling relationships, etc. You can ask about sports, school experiences, birthday celebrations, anything that would not be considered uncomfortable questions. Record your interview either by taking notes or using an audio recorder. Then type up your interview.You will write a 2 page paper that includes:Section 1: Introduction and Literature ReviewIntroduce the topic and the culture that your participant is from. Using two to three articles or academic sources about children in that culture (use terms like child-rearing and childhood), describe what the current research says about childhood in that culture.Section 2: MethodologyA description of how you went about finding you participant, consenting him or her, conducting and recording your interview. Where did you conduct the interview, how long did it take? How did you come up with your interview questions? What did you really want to know about this person’s childhood and the culture in which they were raised?Section 3: Summary of your interviewSummarize your interview in a paragraph or two. First you should describe the age and gender of your participant. What were the major findings? Quote any parts that you thought were particularly important.Section 4: Discussion & ConclusionDiscuss how your participant’s childhood experiences compare to what the research says is typical for that culture. Was it similar or different and in what ways? Then discuss similarities and differences between how that individual was raised and their childhood experiences and your own.Section 5: ReferencesInclude references for all sources in APA formatSection 6: Appendix: Full transcript of your interview
