CORPORATE LEADERSHIP (CRITICAL ANALYSIS)

In class, we will explore ‘corporate leadership’ as a concept characterised by the board of director’s role at the top of the enterprise in setting overarching direction and guiding policies. In this role the board acts as a collective in collaboration with the CEO/Executive. Policies established by the board are implemented through the organisation via the CEO and management. This construct differs from personal leadership by individuals such as the CEO.

The importance of corporate governance lies in its linkage to the system of capitalism and corporation’s access to capital. This critical association between corporate governance and the system capitalism is evidenced by James Wolfensohn’s statement that ‘The governance of the corporation is now as important inthe world economy as the government of countries’.
