Rosa is a 6 year old Hispanic American girl, who lives with her parents, older sister, and grandmother. Her father and grandmother are at high-risk for diabetes because of a family history and excess weight. They live in a rural area with one small grocery store and limited access to healthcare services or recreational venues (such as parks, pools, etc.). The family makes ends meet, but Rosa’s mother recently took on a new job to help with the family finances, which has been a stressful transition for everyone. Rosa performs well in school, but is commonly picked on by her peers because she sometimes uses the Spanish word for things instead of the English word. Her home is bilingual. Her grandmother tries to comfort her when she has been bullied by making her favorite foods. For Christmas, the family pulls their resources together and buys Rosa and her sister a joint gift, a video game system with multiple games. Before this, Rosa would spend her free-time playing outside and watching cartoons. She still watches cartoons (she even likes the commercials with her favorite superheros advertising fast food), but she doesn’t go outside as much and tries to play on the new game system as much as possible each night. She has missed some homework assignments as a result.
