ASSESSING THE PERFORMANCE OF A PLANNED GIVING PROGRAM FOR FUNDRAISING

The instructor will provide a hypothetical dataset in spreadsheet format for a number of sample
nonprofits by the 11/3 class session. Use the provided dataset to write a 3-5 page paper laying out your
conclusions to the following questions. You will need to perform a quantitative analysis, including
calculating various ratios, in order to compare the performance of the nonprofits against each other.
Include a detailed explanation for why you reached each conclusion. Is there additional data that
would have been useful in your analysis? If so, what, and how would you have used it? Are there
additional questions you would ask that are not included in the below list? If so, what, and why?
Identify reasons that certain of the sample organizations may have more successful planned giving
programs than others. Compare and contrast how you approached your analysis for 1) higher
education organizations vs. 2) national membership organizations vs. 3) local arts organizations.
Which organizations:
• Raise the most value/dollars in planned gifts?
• Raise planned gifts most efficiently?
• Have the largest share of fundraising revenue from planned gifts?
• Have the largest share of their constituency as planned givers?
• Are best reaching their fundraising potential for planned gifts?
This assignment will develop the student’s ability to estimate the planned gift fundraising capacity of a
nonprofit, and evaluate appropriate levels of investment for the potential return, as well as to address
fundamental management questions about the performance of planned giving programs.
