ANALYZING SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM

In 4-6 pages, critically engage a social media platform, site, and/or network with specific attention given to identity development and management. You will accomplish this by (1) selecting a social media platform (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Grindr, Tumblr, and so forth) and (2) critiquing a celebritys persona. Celebrity here is understood quite broadly you can select a social media celebrity, a politician, an activist, or an entertainment industry celebrity. The point: select a person, not a group. Drawing on Module 1 observations you will interrogate the celebritys mediated persona what image do they put forth? In what ways? Why does this matter? Shortcomings and strengths of persona, etc. Drawing on Module 2 observations you will then engage the persona on a particular social media platform: in what ways does this social media platform allow for the particular persona to emerge? In what ways is the persona limited by the social media platform/interface? For instance, Twitter allows for a limited number of characters how does this make for a difference persona than the same entity using another platform like Tumblr or Facebook where posts can be longer? What are the implications of these limitations for the persona? While you are focused on one social media platform, you are encouraged to compare platforms to help make the case for the persona development.

This is a research-based essay. As such you are asked to draw on research to back your observations. That is, rather than say that the celebrity persona exhibits a particular sense of self, look to the research to see if that observation fits within the existing literature: in what ways does the celebrity persona fit existing observations and/or in what ways does it challenge existing research? You are expected to draw on course content (e.g., readings) in addition to outside research. Outside research can include peer-reviewed journal articles as well as magazine or newspaper articles (respected sources only; not blogs, unless supported through research). Avoid Wikipedia (but do use it as a starting point for research sources). To be clear: This paper functions similar to a midterm, which means you are expected to draw on content from Modules 1 and 2.
