Order Paper NowIn this week’s discussion topic, we are going to learn about Alzheimer’s disease, which is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. Pay particular attention to pages 422-427 in your textbook for basic information about the causes and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Supplement your knowledge of Alzheimer’s by visiting the National Alzheimer’s Association (Links to an external site.).
REMEMBER TO CITE RESEARCH! For this discussion almost every question requires drawing on the textbook and/or additional resources to support answers.
Answer questions 1 and 2, and then choose either 3a or 3b. Your initial response is due by April 28th, 11:59pm, and your response to two classmates are due by Saturday.
1. If it were available to you, would you want to be tested for Alzheimer’s gene markers? Why or why not? What would be the benefits and drawbacks of your choice?
2. Suggest interventions based on research that are believed to reduce the likelihood of developing neurocognitive disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. What recommendations would you share with someone who has a family history of Alzheimer’s and is concerned they might develop it at some point? Remember you are discussing research-based strategies to prevent Alzheimer’s. This is a question about PREVENTION.
3a. If you have a family member with dementia or Alzheimer’s, what has the experience been like for you and your family? What suggestions do you have for others who may have family members suffering from these disorders?
3b. Describe research-based practices for current treatment of Alzheimer’s. What medical and non-medical interventions that seem to have the most success? Describe at least three interventions. This is a question about TREATMENTS.
