After viewing the material on this week’s lesson, it has helped to expand my knowledge and touch my heart picturing these children who are growing up in low-income homes. Children that come from low-income families and homes suffer more at school; since there is no motivation or aim to be “perfect”, there won’t be as many positive reinforcements for this child to succeed and their expectations will be low from their peers or parent(s). This lesson also discusses skill development programs and the positive effect they have mentally & cognitively on children. Universities and scientists discovered the wasted potential that children are being given, they have taken an aim on poverty culture and have discussed how to support these children. “Since poverty has many facets, social scientists look at it through a variety of indicators. Usually the indicators used relate to the levels of income and consumption. But now poverty is looked through other social indicators like illiteracy level, lack of general resistance due to malnutrition, lack of access to healthcare, lack of job opportunities, lack of access to safe drinking water, sanitation etc.” (Poverty as a Challenge).
