According to the CDC (2018), the leading cause of death in women in the year of 2015 was heart disease at 22.3%. The second cause of death in women in the year of 2015 was cancer at a rate of 21.1%. Although the rate of heart disease was higher, cancer is a very close competitor. In the same year, breast cancer was the leading cause of new cancer cases per 100,000 people. However, the cancer that caused the most women to die in 2015 in the United States, per 100,000 people, is lung cancer at 33.6 women. Breast cancer was the next cancer to cause the most death in women at 20.3/100,000 in the United States (CDC, 2018). To help patients prevent lung cancer and breast cancer is by educating! Lung cancer can be prevented by quitting smoking. According to UpToDate (2019), 90% of lung cancer cases in women are related to smoking. In reference to breast cancer, mammograms should be done annually beginning at age 40 year for women (UpToDate, 2019). Family history of breast cancer is also a huge risk factor. If a first degree female relative has died of breast cancer, it is recommended that if younger than the age of 40 the patient should begin getting screening done 10 years earlier.

It is always important to educate our female patients about prevention. Other than cancer screening prevention, there are other disease processes that effect women that should be prevented. Some of these diseases include: hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis.
