Strong voter turnout is critical to ensuring the democratic process, but it’s also important that voters are well-informed before they head to the polls! For this exercise, choose a political issue you feel strongly about, and identify a candidate (this candidate may be at the local, state, or national level) who agrees with your stance. Imagine that you’re interested in joining this candidate’s next electoral campaign, and write a 1-2 page (250-500 words) letter to this person. In your letter, explain why you want to help with the campaign, and pitch some ideas about how you would increase both awareness about your chosen issue and voter participation in your own community. If you’re struggling to get started, think about your strengths and what assets you’d bring to the campaign. For instance, are you a part of or do you have access to a population with historically low voter turnout? Are you a good grassroots organizer who can get neighbors involved? Are you a tech wiz who could help build a website or mobile app? Be creative and convince your chosen candidate that you’d be a valuable addition to the team.
Discussion 4: The Electoral College
During the last couple of decades, a question has arisen after each election: should the electoral college be abolished? Page 346 in Chapter 12 of your textbook offers two opposing opinions on the subject. Once you have read the chapter and the opinions offered, craft your own 250-500 word opinion on the subject. You must take a clear stance on this issue, so you may want to begin your opinion with the either the phrase, “The electoral college should remain in place because ________” or “The electoral college should be abolished because ____________.”
Here are some questions to take into account as you think about this issue:
Are there benefits to the current system? If so, what are they?
Are there drawbacks to the current system? If so, what are they?
What consequences might occur as a result of making a change? What consequences might the nation face if the system remains the same?
Discussion 5: Reflection
Congratulations! You’re almost at the finish line. As you complete this course, take a moment to think back on what you’ve learned during the last few weeks. In a response of between 250-500 words, please answer the following questions:
1.)What’s the most surprising or interesting thing you learned about the American system of government?
2.)Is there anything you wish you could change about our system?
3.)What can you do in the future to become or remain an engaged citizen?
Note: I am attaching the word file for Introduction (Discussion 1)(which you did) and Federalism (Discussion 2)(which other tutor did) as well so you will have help writing Reflection (#Discussion 5)
