A strong leader and manager would possess all five elements of emotional intelligence; self- awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skill (Huber 2014). As a leader, to be self- aware means to understand themselves, emotions, motivations, desires, weakness and strengths. When working with other people, especially on an authority level it is important to be able to connect with them on an emotional level. A strong leader who is self- aware would present as opened minded, mindful of strengths and weakness, has set boundaries in place, and practices self discipline. As a leader or manager, it is important to remember that you supervise several employees; all who are different in their own way, they have different work styles, beliefs, strengths and weakness themselves. Being self- aware is the first step to not only creating strong therapeutic relationship but also motivating and supporting others who turn to you for guidance.
