Leadership.

While there are many attempts to define leadership, the one proposed by Northouse is as good as any:

“Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to

achieve a common goal” (pg. 5).

In Discussion 1 we considered an observation by John Kenneth Galbraith: “All of the great leaders have had one characteristic in common: it was the willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxiety of their people in their time. This, and not much else, is the essence of leadership.”

Culture.

Discussion 2 pointed out that Culture can be defined as “the learned beliefs, values, norms, symbols, and traditions common to a group of people” (Northouse, pg. 384). Also, Culture can be described as “a way of life of a group of people, the configuration of all the more or less stereotyped patterns of learned behavior, which are handed down from one generation to the next through the means of language and imitation” [Adler, pg. 18].

Purpose.

The purpose of this final assignment is to tie the two concepts of the course together by examining leadership and culture during an historical event marked by a major anxiety. Base your paper on one of the following:

Description

Develop a paper of no more than 6 double spaced pages based on the topic of the person in question (leadership approach), the situation/anxiety/crisis/whatever that propelled him/her into a leadership position, and the prevailing culture that allowed or prompted this to happen.

You are also to provide a separate 8-10 slide Power Point presentation.
