Order Paper NowThe three styles of leadership are authoritative, democratic, and consultative. They each have their benefits and at times they could be setbacks. The most effective management theory when addressing new recruits, in my opinion, is the authoritative style more than the other two. This is to prepare them for what is next and that is being on the front line of crime and responding to emergency situations. The first line officers will encounter more emergency scenarios and crimes of violence, robberies, or drug related offenses than the upper echelon command will. In these situations, there is not the luxury of time to use the democratic or consultative management styles and the person in charge is the one making decisions based on their experience and knowledge. It is the middle and upper level of leadership that have the ability to use time and another style.
Authoritative leaders will command with total control in a situation or when leading personnel. This is the best for those in first line leadership positions like law enforcement, corrections departments, fire/rescue departments, and even businesses with a high turnover of employees like fast food jobs. The authoritative leader will inform their staff of the decisions being made and they will execute the command without giving any input. The leader is not open to hearing thoughts or ideas on the situation from the subordinates.
Democratic leaders will typically seek out the help of their subordinates on making decisions with the majority deciding the course of action. One of the major functions of the democratic leadership is that it essentially distributes the leadership and empowers the subordinates on the team. The democratic leadership style is generally used when the people involved each have a part of the solution. An example would be a superintendent discussing the ways to move forward with standards training. The leader may use democratic leadership to determine the course of action when long term planning is being conducted.
The consultative management, or leadership, style is used when there is time to permit it similar to the democratic style. This is generally used at the middle to upper level of leadership and when the situation is not an emergency. The leader will maintain the decision-making power but uses the input of the subordinate experiences to assist in making that decision. Those that will be affected will usually be asked to provide their input before a final decision is made on the subject. The top leaders in police, fire, rescue, and corrections could use the consultative style to achieve good communication and consistently prepare for the future of their departments.
